Mike Singletary......No, Not That One.....

We are all well familiar with Mike Singletary. He was a staple in the Chicago Bears defense for years, and is generally regarded as one of the best (if not the best) middle linebacker of all time. Of course we all know that more recently, he's known for his outburst of tight end Vernon Davis last season. If you haven't seen the clip, take a look:

But this post isn't about that Mike Singletary, it's about the other one. You know the one from Texas Tech University? Well if you don't, please take notice. The only reason I got a chance to see this guy was because of the wonderful world of ESPN360. If you haven't checked it out, it's awesome!!!! It allows you to watch the game on your laptop....LIVE!!! The reason I was watching last night was because my TV was occupied with some quality television like American Idol or Real World.

Anyways, I got a chance to see the action and the show the guy put on was amazing. He scored 29 straight points, to lead the Red Raiders past Texas A&M in the Big 12 Tournament. "I was just in a zone" said Singletary.....you think???? This is just the type of performance you can expect from guys during championship week. I can't wait to see what today provides us.

Championship Week Begins!!!

I know it has been about a week from my last post, but this is probably my favorite time of year and I needed the week to mentally prepare myself for what's in store. Yes, I could have commented about the WBC (World Baseball Classic), but in all honesty, I just don't care enough to invest the time. I'm not alone right?????

So there are a few teams that have punched their ticket into the big dance, but today things really start to get interesting. The Big East tournament (which started yesterday) is the first of the major conferences to get going and all you need is one unexpected to make a run to screw things up for those on the "bubble".

I will try and watch as much of the action, I know this will make the "Gal" happy, from here on it to fill you in on who's in and who's bubble has been bursted. Keep me bookmarked, because the action is about to heat up....

You Just Got PUNKED!!!!

Okay, this isn't Ashton Kutcher pranking a celebrity, but this is a prank conducted yesterday that involved 18,000+ people in it. It's extremely creative and I had to share this with you.

To set it up, a guy is throwing a blind folded half court shot for $500K, and the crowd goes nuts as if he makes it. I wish I was this creative, or had the contacts to pull something like this off. Needless to say it's extremely funny and has inspired me to come up with something to work on for one of my friends.....so you guys better watch out!!!!!

Hello Stephon.......

So I was at the gym this morning, yes I do go on the rare occasion, and my iPod crapped out on me. I was stuck listening to my fellow gym mates debate the Stephon Marbury acquisition made by the Celtics yesterday. The majority, well actually all, were apposed to the deal. although I'm not really sure why? This is a low risk high reward move for them, here's why.

Lets go with the worst case scenario (which is what most expect), Marbury pouts about his playing time, tries to break up the chemistry, and eventually sits court side with the fans watching the C's play after buying the ticket.
Okay, so does anyone REALLY think that's going to happen? Lets be serious people. That's never going to happen. Do you know why it's never going to happen? Because the moment he acts up, he will be cut. He signed for the veteran minimum ($1.3M for his years of service) which is pro-rated for the remainder of the season. So with two months to go, you're looking at $400K, that's not a lot compared to what he can bring to the team.

Marbury is a free agent after the season ends, thus making the remaining two months a contract year for him. While I have no evidence, but I'm sure there is a study out there, my "eye test" tells me that there is significant improvement of a players performance during a contract year. The man has something to prove and should be motivated to make an impact on a potential championship team. And if he isn't, he gets cut. Also, look at the Celtics bench, it's not that impressive. We don't have a James Posey who can contribute, Mikki Moore is no PJ Brown, Eddie House has been too inconsistent so who else is out there that has the potential to score 20 points for us while giving some of the starters a rest. Not to mention he can handle the point (or the two guard) and would keep Eddie House away from dribbling the ball....THANK GOD!!!! Lastly, people seem to overlook the Kevin Garnett factor here. This is a guy who from the moment he was traded to Boston, changed the culture and attitude around the team. He demands accountability from himself and his teammates and it will be no different for Marbury. KG will keep him in line and if he doesn't, say it with me again people.....HE GETS CUT.

So, let the Stephon Marbury era begin, and I hope he can be a contributing factor to a championship team.

Tiger's Return.......

Anyone else really excited about watching Tiger Woods return to the links today? I know I am. These last 8 months just haven't been as entertaining on the golfing circuit. Don't get me wrong, who doesn't enjoy seeing Camillo Villegas do his "Spiderman" before lining up a put,

but it's not everyday you get to watch a legend potentially make history. I heard him talk yesterday about how healthy he is, how easy and free it is for him to swing now without fear of knee pain. That's scary, the man dominated his profession on a bad leg, imagine what he's going to do with that leg healthy now? I remember those suggesting that with a bride and baby in his life, it would distract his attention from the world of golf. What they neglected to process is that this guy isn't like you and me. He's the best ever at his profession and can't be viewed like Bill from the local club cutting back his time on the course after a new addition to the family. The guy is a freak, and he will never stop thriving to be the best he can be, no matter how many kids he has.

I don't expect too much from him this weekend though. The man hasn't played competitive golf in 8 months so I expect him to be rusty, However, does anyone honestly think that if he sweeps through the weekend and comes out on top, you wouldn't be surprised? That's just Tiger for you.

I love football. Nothing makes me happier than parking my butt on the couch on Sunday's, having the Red Zone Channel take me from game to game. I can literally sit on my couch from 11:00 am when the pregame activities start to the end of the Sunday night game, it's bad!!!

However what I can't find myself doing, even during these bleak dark times, is watch the NFL Combine on the NFL Network. I tried, believe me. I guess if you like watching guys in tight spandex outfits run 40 yards at a time and jump as high as they can, then this event is for you. I'd be more interested in watching them take the wonderlic test and seeing how they score and react to the questions. 55 questions in 12 minutes.....seriously???? Can you imagine watching guys like Andre Smith (the offensive tackle from Alabama who left the Combine without telling anyone), Ray Maualuga (LB out of USC) or Vontae Davis (CB out of Illinois) answer the following questions:

John is a mechanic. He makes $8.50 an hour, plus $3 extra for every oil change he performs. Last week he worked 36 hours and performed 17 oil changes. How much money did he make?

A box of staples has a length of 6 cm, a width of 7 cm, and a volume of 378 cm cubed. What is the height of the box?

A basketball player averaged 20 points a game over the course of six games. His scores in five of those games were 23, 18, 16, 24, and 27. How many points did he score in the sixth game?

Now that would be appointment television. So the draft is only a few months away, then we have rookie mini-camps, followed by regular mini-camps and of course training camp before the preseason starts. You'll have plenty of opportunities to get your fix in before that first Thursday night game. Enjoy the "off-season"......

Can You Be Traded....Then NOT Traded?????

The trade deadline has come and gone and those big names we thought were heading to other teams didn't really happen. I guess the biggest names to move were Jermaine O'Neal and Shawn Marion. Aside from that we saw minor deals. Of course we saw the trade that happened then didn't happen. Luckily for for Chris Wilcox, he was able to find his way out of Oklahoma City....welcome to New York and all their dis-functionalism.

The move I liked the best is what Orlando did by bringing in Rafer Alston to play point. It appears Jameer Nelson is out the remainder of the season and Tyrone Lue and Anothny Johnson just weren't going to cut it. At least Alston gives them a legit staring PG at a very reasonable price.

The only thing teams can do now to improve themselves for the playoff run is through free agency. Not much is out there, but a few people are expected to become available. The Celtics traded Sam Cassell and Will Solomon (who was acquired for Thursday) to give them 13 guys on their active roster, freeing the way to sign two free agents, maybe Joe Smith and Stephon Marbury? Needless to say the pool will be limited, you might see some veteran players bought out of their contracts but I wouldn't expect too much. It will have to be quick because free agents have to be on their roster by March 1st in order to be available for playoff rosters.
